MAF flights help Wordsower team share the Gospel in Liberia
Kim Smith, a long-time missionary and partner of MAF, shares insights into his organisation's efforts to spread the Gospel and provide vital aid to remote communities in West Africa.
As the founder of Wordsower Liberia, Kim has been working with unreached tribes in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, and Guinea. Through partnerships with Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF), the organisation has reached isolated areas, as tribes embrace Christianity.
“Through partnerships with organisations like MAF, we’ve overcome challenges and seen transformative breakthroughs among isolated tribes,” says Kim. “The Mandingo tribes, especially in Grand Gedeh where we operate, have been a significant focus of our ministry efforts.”
Wordsower Liberia focuses on sending missionary teams to remote areas, bringing the light of Christianity to those who have never heard it. However, transportation to these regions, where roads are often difficult or dangerous, remains a critical challenge.
"MAF flights have been a lifeline, delivering essential supplies and missionaries safely and quickly," Kim emphasises. "This is crucial for reaching places like Grand Gedeh."
In 2023, Wordsower made a historic breakthrough among the Mandingo people, a previously resistant tribe. The ministry has now been granted permission to establish churches in every Mandingo town. The Mandingo tribes are found in Lofa, in the north of the country, but they have also migrated to other counties in Liberia.
“This miracle shift opens doors for widespread evangelism and discipleship, marking a significant step towards spiritual transformation,” Kim reflects. "The Mandingo people in Grand Gedeh, are beginning to open their hearts to the Gospel."
The ministry’s evangelism approach often includes screenings of the Jesus film, leading to conversions, baptisms, and the formation of new churches.
"Screening the Jesus film in native languages has led to new churches and responses to the Gospel in places like Grand Gedeh,” Kim says.
Wordsower also focuses on training local leaders to ensure the long-term sustainability of the newly established churches.
We believe in raising up local leaders for the growth and sustainability of these new churches,” adds Kim.
Joining Wordsower on this trip were Kyler Gerrard and Caleb Ziebarth, who actively participated in helping spread the Gospel to remote tribes.
"Kyler and Caleb are crucial to our mission, and their enthusiasm represents the future of Wordsower," Kim notes.
Kim expresses gratitude to Mission Aviation Fellowship for its support and emphasises the importance of unity among Christian organisations.
"We couldn’t do this without MAF and other Christian organisations. Together, we’re making a difference, especially among the Mandingo tribes in Grand Gedeh," Kim says.
